If you are comparing overseas medical education after Class 12, Vietnam is worth evaluating as a specific university decision — not as a generic “country package”. The important questions are straightforward: does the student meet that university's criteria, what is the complete six-year cost, and is the degree positioned for the licensing route in India?
Quick answer: who should consider Vietnam?
Vietnam can make sense for an Indian student who wants an English-medium six-year medical program, a smaller partner-university shortlist, a climate and food culture that many Indian students find manageable, and a transparent direct-admission process. It is not a shortcut around academic effort or India's licensing exam.
The seven partner universities listed on this site include government and private institutions. Their requirements are not interchangeable, so shortlist by profile rather than by the cheapest headline fee.
Fees: plan for the whole six years
The current six-year tuition range across the partner network is approximately $24,606 to $39,350. Five universities use a flat annual tuition model; Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy and the University of Health Sciences, VNU-HCM use escalating schedules.
Tuition is only one line in the family budget. Ask for an itemised estimate that includes:
- tuition for every year, not only Year 1;
- hostel and room-sharing assumptions;
- visa processing, flights, insurance and document authentication;
- what is payable to the university versus the admissions partner; and
- the deadline and refund terms for each payment.

Eligibility and NEET: check the university, not a brochure headline
The general minimum age is 17 by December 31 of the admission year. Class 12 requirements vary:
- Can Tho asks for 80% in Maths, Chemistry and Biology.
- Phan Chau Trinh asks for 60% in PCB plus English as a compulsory subject.
- Buon Ma Thuot and Dong A use a 65% aggregate requirement.
- The University of Health Sciences, VNU-HCM and Cuu Long use a 60% PCB requirement.
- Dai Nam uses a valid NEET score rather than a fixed percentage and requires NEET for admission.

What the admission process looks like
Most applications for the September intake open around March–April and are handled directly with the university on a rolling basis. The usual sequence is:
- profile counselling and university shortlisting;
- document preparation and registration;
- university review and invitation letter;
- fee payment and admission confirmation;
- visa processing;
- pre-departure briefing and travel; and
- arrival, hostel and ongoing academic support.
Incomplete documents are the most common avoidable delay. Start with the 10th and 12th marksheets, transfer certificate, English-medium bonafide certificate and a passport with sufficient validity. Some universities ask for additional health or NEET documents.
Recognition and the route back to India
Do not rely on the phrase “NMC recognised” as a promise. Since 2021, India's National Medical Commission sets foreign medical graduate eligibility criteria through regulations rather than maintaining a simple pre-approved list of foreign universities.
Before paying, verify three things yourself:
- the specific medical school is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools;
- the degree is recognised by Vietnam's Ministry of Education and Training; and
- the course and student pathway are consistent with the current Indian foreign medical graduate regulations and licensing requirements.

A practical shortlist checklist
Before making a decision, write down the answers to these questions for the exact university:
- What are the Class 12 subjects and marks required?
- Is NEET required at admission, or only relevant later?
- What is the six-year tuition total, including escalation?
- What is included in the hostel and one-time cost estimate?
- Which hospital or clinical teaching arrangements are part of the program?
- What documents, deadlines and refund terms apply?
- Who is responsible for visa renewals and student support after arrival?
Vietnam can be a good fit when the university, budget and regulatory pathway all line up. The safest next step is a profile-specific comparison of the seven partner universities, followed by a written fee and document checklist for the selected intake.
