Vietnam and Romania should not be compared as interchangeable “cheap MBBS abroad” options. Vietnam is usually considered through a smaller partner-university network with direct, university-specific screening. Romania commonly involves a European university application and a formal acceptance-and-visa file. The better choice depends on total cost, entry route, language in clinical settings, the named university and the India-side licensing checks—not on country branding.
This guide is a parent decision aid. Use the site's Vietnam university profiles, fee structure guide, eligibility guide and validity and NMC guide alongside the current documents from a named Romanian medical university.
At-a-glance comparison
| Decision point | Vietnam | Romania |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition signal | Current site partner data ranges from about $4,100 to higher year-wise schedules, depending on university | UMF Carol Davila's official 2026-27 fee sheet lists €10,000/year for English-taught medicine |
| Admission shape | University-specific Class 12 screening; NEET treatment varies by university | Named university rules, application documents and any faculty selection process must be checked |
| Teaching language | English-medium claims need separate clinical-language verification | English-taught programmes exist; local patient communication still needs checking |
| Visa planning | Follow the university invitation/sponsorship and Vietnam immigration process | Romanian MAE describes D/SD long-stay study visas for eligible full-time students |
| Recognition | Check exact school in WDOMS, MOET information and NMC material | Check the exact institution, programme and NMC position; accreditation alone is not Indian registration |
| Practical trade-off | Warmer climate and a smaller, India-focused admissions network | Higher tuition benchmark and a more formal European admissions/visa file |
The Romania tuition figure is a published example, not a promise that every Romanian medical university charges the same amount. Likewise, the Vietnam figures are planning data from this site's partner profiles, not a universal national fee.
Fees: compare the whole route
For Vietnam, build the budget from tuition, hostel, food, transport, insurance, documents, visa or residence, flights and an emergency reserve. The current site data includes private options around $4,100-$5,200 annual tuition and higher public-university schedules, but the written offer controls.
For Romania, start with the named university's tuition schedule. UMF Carol Davila's 2026-27 international-student document lists €10,000 per study year for its English-taught medicine programme. This is a benchmark, not a complete six-year or living-cost total. Ask about deposits, accommodation, health cover, residence paperwork, travel and fee revision.
Do not compare a Vietnam “six-year tuition” number with Romania's annual tuition without matching:
- the number of study years and whether any preparatory language year is needed;
- hostel or private rent and deposits;
- food, transport and insurance;
- document translation, legalisation and courier costs;
- visa, residence and travel costs;
- currency movement and bank charges;
- refund, deferral and withdrawal terms.
The cost-of-living budget guide shows how to separate recurring expenses from the university invoice.
Admission and NEET are separate questions
Vietnam's partner profiles do not use one identical admission rule. Dai Nam lists a valid NEET qualifying score as mandatory at admission, while the other current profiles describe university-specific Class 12 criteria and a separate India-side licensing relevance. A student should obtain the exact rule in writing before paying an application or seat fee.
Romania must also be treated institution by institution. A parent should request the official medicine-admission page, academic equivalence requirements, accepted school-leaving qualification, language evidence, application deadline, selection method and the document that becomes the basis for visa processing. Do not assume that a general European admissions blog answers an Indian applicant's case.
In both destinations, ask two different questions:
- Will this university admit the student?
- What will India require when the student later seeks registration?
The answer to the first cannot override the second. Read NMC's current rules page and FMGL FAQ for the applicable framework, then ask the university to document the course, training and graduation pathway.
English classroom versus clinical communication
An English-taught label is useful but incomplete. For Vietnam, confirm whether lectures, examinations, practical teaching, textbooks and hospital postings are in English, and how students learn the Vietnamese needed for patient history-taking and ward communication. The English-medium clinical-language guide explains the questions to put in writing.
For Romania, confirm the exact programme and hospital language. An English programme may still require communication with Romanian-speaking patients or staff. Ask whether Romanian classes are compulsory, when they begin and whether clinical placements require a language level.
Language is not a reason to reject either country automatically. It is a reason to assess the student's willingness to learn local clinical communication before choosing a programme.
Clinical training and internship due diligence
Country labels do not establish clinical quality. Ask each named university for the hospital list, clinical years, departments, supervision model, attendance and logbook requirements, patient-language support and internship or clerkship arrangements.
For Vietnam, current partner profiles describe different models: Can Tho lists an on-campus teaching hospital and affiliated hospitals; Buon Ma Thuot lists an on-campus multi-specialty hospital; Dong A lists a VinMec clinical partnership; Phan Chau Trinh lists nine affiliated hospitals. These are useful starting points, not guarantees for every intake.
For Romania, request the faculty's current teaching-hospital and clinical-placement information. Ask how rotations are allocated, whether a local registration or language condition applies and what final documents are issued. “European standard” is not a substitute for a programme-specific answer.
Visa, residence and student support
Vietnam's official National Immigration Portal is the starting point for current entry information. Ask the university who provides invitation or sponsorship documents, who handles temporary residence registration and what happens if the passport or intake date changes. A short entry permission is not automatically the complete student-residence process.
Romania's official Foreign Affairs e-visa guidance describes a long-stay study visa marked D/SD for eligible full-time study at an accredited or provisionally authorised institution. Its supporting-document guidance includes proof of acceptance, accommodation and insurance. The student should follow the current university and Romanian diplomatic-mission instructions rather than a travel agent's old checklist.
Also compare everyday support: hostel wardens, emergency contacts, airport arrival, residence renewal, health insurance claims, Indian food access, weather adjustment and how parents receive updates. These practical details often matter more than a small tuition difference.
Recognition: the decision checkpoint
For Vietnam, search the exact school in WDOMS and check relevant Vietnam MOET information. For Romania, verify the named university and medical programme through the institution's official and competent-authority information. WDOMS is a directory, not a guarantee of recognition or licensure in India.
Then map the complete pathway: degree title, course duration, English-medium scope, theory, practical and clinical training, internship or clerkship, local registration and final certificates. Re-check the current NMC framework before admission and again before graduation. Do not use another country's past exam results as a guarantee for the student's future outcome.
Bottom line for parents
Vietnam may fit a family seeking a lower current tuition benchmark, direct university screening and an India-focused support network, provided the family is disciplined about clinical-language, hospital and NMC due diligence. Romania may fit a student who can manage a higher European fee benchmark and a more formal application and visa file, while also learning the local clinical environment.

Limitations note — checked 29 July 2026
Tuition, admissions, language rules, hospital placements, hostel, exchange rates, visa fees and residence procedures can change by intake. The Romania tuition example is from UMF Carol Davila's official 2026-27 fee document and should not be generalised to every university. Vietnam amounts are current partner-site planning data. Confirm the exact offer, current Romanian MAE instructions, Vietnam immigration process and NMC rules before payment.
