MBBS in Vietnam vs South Korea 2026: A Parent Decision Guide for Indian Students

For most Indian parents, the first decision is not “Vietnam or South Korea?” but whether a specific university in either country offers a complete, verifiable medical route for an Indian student. Vietnam's current partner pathway is generally a direct Class 12-based application, with a six-year medical route and published local fee planning data. South Korea also has six-year medical programmes, but international admission and language requirements are decided by each university and department. The two destinations should therefore be compared at programme level.

Start with the site's comparison hub, Vietnam university profiles and fee guide. For Korea, use the Korean government's Study in Korea education-system guidance, international language guidance and the relevant university's own admissions office.

At-a-glance comparison

Decision pointVietnamSouth Korea
Course structurePartner data describes a six-year medical routeKorean government guidance describes six years for medicine and other specialised fields
Typical starting routeDirect university application against Class 12 criteria; no separate test for most partner universitiesUniversity-specific international admission; medicine access and selection must be confirmed directly
Language questionAsk for English-medium scope and Vietnamese clinical communication planKorean government guidance says language proof varies by university or department; medical clinical language needs special scrutiny
Tuition planningCurrent partner tuition data ranges from $4,100 flat yearly at Dai Nam to a higher scheduled public-university rangeNo single national figure is safe for an Indian medicine applicant; request the exact university's current fee sheet
VisaFollow the university's current sponsorship and Vietnam immigration instructionsA long-term study route is handled through Korea's official D-2 study category, subject to current visa rules and university documents
Indian registrationCheck the exact course and institution against NMC FMGL requirementsApply the same NMC due diligence; do not infer eligibility from Korea's general university status

This table is a screening tool. It is not a ranking and does not claim that one country's every medical school is equivalent to another's.

Admission and academic fit

Vietnam's partner profiles give families a clearer starting screen. The current local data lists minimum academic thresholds from 60% or 65% at several universities to 80% with specified subjects at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Dai Nam is currently the partner exception requiring a valid NEET qualifying score at admission; the other listed partner universities state that NEET is not required for admission but remains relevant to the later Indian licensing pathway.

South Korea is more decentralised from an international applicant's point of view. The Korean Ministry of Education says international admission processes and foreign-student numbers are decided differently by each university. The government Study in Korea portal also notes that medicine is a six-year specialised programme and that international students must satisfy the requirements set by the university or department. Parents should ask whether an Indian Class 12 science qualification is accepted directly, whether a foundation or language year is required, and whether international students are eligible for the medical college itself rather than only biomedical or public-health courses.

Language: the question that can change the whole decision

Language needs a year-by-year answer. “English-medium” in an advertisement may describe lectures while patient histories, ward rounds, records, assessments or internship communication happen in Vietnamese or Korean.

For Vietnam, ask for the teaching language in the pre-clinical and clinical years, the amount of Vietnamese language support, and how students communicate with patients. The site's English-medium and clinical-language guide sets out the questions.

For South Korea, the official Study in Korea guidance says applicants must submit Korean or English language proof according to the university or department. That is a reason to request the medical school's curriculum, not a reason to assume that a general university English certificate is enough. Ask specifically about TOPIK, English tests, Korean language progression, clinical assessment language and internship eligibility.

Fees and the full six-year budget

Vietnam's local planning data is more concrete for the seven partner universities. It currently shows $4,100 per year at Dai Nam, $4,500 at Dong A and Cuu Long, $5,000 at Buon Ma Thuot and scheduled tuition up to $8,214 in year six at UHS-VNU HCM. Hostel, living costs, document work, flights, insurance and immigration expenses are separate unless the written offer says otherwise.

For South Korea, do not compare a broad internet tuition estimate with a Vietnam university invoice. Request the medical college's fee per semester, language-course charges, laboratory and clinical fees, insurance, accommodation, deposits, meals, transport and expected annual increase. Convert currencies only as a planning exercise and retain the original quote. A lower tuition figure can disappear if a language year or private accommodation is compulsory.

Clinical training, internship and recognition

The NMC's rules and regulations page currently links the FMGL regulations and updated FAQs. The official FAQ material includes requirements around course duration, English medium, clinical training, same-foreign-institution internship, local registration or eligibility in the country of qualification and the required Indian licensing test. This is a regulatory checklist, not an approval label.

For Vietnam, ask the named university for the clinical rotation plan, affiliated hospitals, student supervision, patient-language support and same-institution internship documents. The site's clinical training guide explains why hospital counts alone are insufficient.

For South Korea, ask the medical school whether an international student can complete the full clinical course and internship there, in the same institution or permitted pathway, and whether the graduate can obtain the local registration or eligibility required by the NMC framework. Check the exact school in WDOMS as one due-diligence step, but remember that a directory record is not by itself recognition, accreditation or endorsement.

Visa, residence and family support

Vietnam families should use the current Vietnam National Immigration Portal together with the university's sponsorship and temporary-residence instructions. Ask who files each step and what the student must carry on arrival.

South Korea's official Visa Portal identifies D-2 as the study category, but the exact subcategory, documents and issuance process depend on the programme and university. Parents should also ask about alien registration, health screening, accommodation reporting and whether a language course changes the visa pathway. Treat a visa category name as a starting point, not a completed plan.

A parent decision checklist

Choose the destination only after the named university can answer these questions in writing:

  • Is the student academically eligible for the actual medical college?
  • Is NEET treatment clear for admission and for India's later licensing pathway?
  • Is the full course six years, and where is the internship completed?
  • What language is used in lectures, wards, records and patient communication?
  • What are the six-year tuition, hostel, living, visa and travel totals?
  • What local registration or eligibility does the graduate receive?
  • What is the university's refund and deferral policy?
  • Who is the official contact in India and at the university?

Fees, intakes, international seat policies, language rules, visa procedures, hospital arrangements and NMC interpretations can change. Vietnam figures in this article use the site's current partner data; South Korea is intentionally described at programme level because university rules differ. Reconfirm every item with the university, official immigration authority and current NMC material before payment.

For a side-by-side review, use the contact page or the WhatsApp counselling flow. Share the written offers, marks, budget and language preferences. Counselling can organise due-diligence questions; it cannot guarantee admission, visa approval, Indian registration or exam outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

Is South Korea a direct alternative to MBBS in Vietnam for Indian students?

Not automatically. South Korean medical schools are generally six-year programmes, but each university sets its own international admission route and language rules. A parent must verify that a specific Korean medical programme actually accepts the student, is taught in a suitable language and aligns with India's current foreign-medical-graduate requirements.

Which is cheaper, MBBS in Vietnam or South Korea?

There is no safe country-wide answer. Vietnam's partner data gives published tuition planning ranges, while Korean tuition, living costs and programme access must be checked at university level. Compare the full written six-year budget, including language preparation, accommodation, insurance, travel, visa and clinical-year costs.

Is MBBS in South Korea taught in English?

Do not assume it. The Korean government's Study in Korea guidance says language proof depends on the university or department and may be Korean or English. For medicine, request the curriculum and clinical-language plan for every year, including patient communication and internship.

Does Vietnam require NEET for MBBS admission?

The current partner data is university-specific: Dai Nam requires a valid NEET qualifying score at admission, while the other listed partner universities state that NEET is not required for admission but remains relevant to the later Indian licensing pathway. Confirm the exact university and intake in writing.

Which country has a simpler admission route?

The current Vietnam partner route is usually a direct application assessed against Class 12 criteria, with no separate entrance test for most partner universities. South Korean international admission is decided by each university, and medicine may have additional academic, language or capacity constraints. Compare a named programme, not a country headline.

Can a South Korea medical degree lead to practice in India?

It should never be assumed. The family must map the exact course, institution, local registration or eligibility, clinical training, internship and Indian test requirements against the NMC's current FMGL framework. A university or directory listing alone is not a guarantee of Indian registration.

What should parents request before choosing Vietnam or South Korea?

Request the university's current offer and curriculum, full fee schedule, language-by-year statement, named teaching hospitals, internship details, local licensing position, visa route, accommodation terms, refund policy and written answers on Indian recognition due diligence. Keep all documents dated because these details can change.
