Vietnam and Malaysia can both look attractive to an Indian family because they are in Southeast Asia, use English in parts of medical education and offer established higher-education systems. The decision is still university-specific. Vietnam's partner data shows a tuition-led six-year route, while Malaysia has a wider spread of public, private and international-branch programmes with materially different fees, duration and recognition records.
Vietnam vs Malaysia: quick screening table
| Decision point | Vietnam | Malaysia |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition screen | About $4,100–$8,214/year in current local partner data | Varies widely; IMU's 2026 international five-year MBBS total is RM692,680 before applicable taxes and living costs |
| Admission | University review of Class 12 and documents; NEET varies by institution | Institution-specific academic and English requirements; some programmes may use interviews or tests |
| Programme length | Partner routes are generally six years | Many Malaysian medical degrees are five years, but confirm the exact route |
| English | Must be checked for lectures, wards and records | Often used, but module and clinical language must be confirmed in writing |
| Recognition check | University legal status, WDOMS, MOET evidence and NMC due diligence | MMC recognised-qualification list, MQA accreditation, WDOMS and NMC due diligence |
| Immigration | Vietnamese visa and residence steps through the university and relevant authorities | EMGS/Student Pass process, eVAL where applicable and post-arrival medical screening |
This is a screening table, not a ranking. Use the site's country comparison hub, Vietnam fee guide and university profiles, then request a Malaysian institution's current international fee sheet.
Cost: headline tuition can mislead
Vietnam's current partner data lists tuition from about $4,100 to $8,214 per year, with six-year tuition totals of roughly $24,606 to $39,350 depending on university and schedule. Add hostel, food, visa, travel, insurance, books, instruments and currency movement.
Malaysia has no single useful country price. As one transparent example, IMU's current medicine page lists international tuition of RM69,268 per semester and RM692,680 total for its five-year MBBS at IMU. Its page states that listed fees exclude the 6% Sales and Service Tax where applicable, and the fee is separate from accommodation, insurance, student-pass and daily expenses. That example is not a quote for every Malaysian university.
Build both budgets using the same categories:
- tuition, taxes, annual revisions and payment milestones;
- hostel or rent, deposits, utilities and meals;
- visa, residence, student-pass, medical screening and insurance;
- flights, local transport, laptop, books and clinical instruments;
- India travel, currency movement and emergency reserve;
- internship, examination or licensing preparation costs;
- the financial impact of repeating a semester or extending accommodation.
Ask for a signed invoice and refund policy. Verify bank details through an official university channel. A low advertised first-year number is not a reliable six-year budget.
Admission and academic fit
Vietnam partner universities generally assess Class 12 subjects, marks, age, passport and supporting documents. NEET is not listed for most partner universities in the local data, while Dai Nam has a separate mandatory NEET admission rule. Dong A's 2026 international announcement uses a 65% academic threshold, approved subject combinations, English evidence and an interview.
Malaysia is more institution-specific. A family may be considering a Malaysian public university, a private university, an overseas branch campus or a twinning route, and each can have a different academic threshold, interview, English requirement and programme structure. Ask whether the degree is awarded by the Malaysian campus or a partner institution, where each phase is delivered and whether any transfer is compulsory.
For either country, preserve the exact offer letter, academic equivalence decision, fee schedule, programme code, curriculum, refund terms and immigration instructions. Do not let a generic “MBBS in Malaysia” or “MBBS in Vietnam” brochure substitute for a university document.
English, local language and clinical communication
English-medium lectures do not automatically mean English-only hospitals. In Vietnam, Vietnamese can matter for patient histories, consent, case notes and ward instructions. In Malaysia, English is common in medical education, but IMU's current page notes that some modules may be delivered in Malay or English. The exact university and clinical site control the real experience.
Ask both institutions:
- Which subjects and examinations are conducted in English?
- What language is used in wards, case records and patient communication?
- When do clinical postings begin and how many supervised hours are required?
- Which hospitals are named in current affiliation documents?
- What logbook, internship and completion certificates are issued?
- Do international students receive the same clinical access as local students?
Avoid pass-rate claims or “international exposure” slogans unless the institution supplies verifiable evidence. The relevant comparison is supervised clinical access and documentation, not the language used in a marketing headline.
Recognition and the India pathway
Malaysia's Medical Council says practitioners seeking registration in Malaysia need qualifications from recognised medical institutions listed in the Second Schedule of the Medical Act. Malaysia also maintains the MQA register for accredited programmes. Check both the MMC medical education and recognition page and the recognised qualifications list, along with the MQA register.
For Vietnam, check the university's current legal and programme evidence, the Vietnam MOET quality-information portal and the school's WDOMS record where available. WDOMS is a directory, not a recognition decision.
For both destinations, read the NMC rules and regulations and the current FMGL FAQ. Confirm the course duration, English, theory, practical and clinical training, internship or practical-training structure and final documents for the student's admission year. No counsellor can guarantee future NMC registration or licensing-exam results.
Visa, residence and family support
Vietnam students should ask the university who handles visa documentation, residence registration, renewals, airport arrival and hostel allocation. Confirm the current process through the relevant Vietnamese authority or embassy before travel.
Malaysia's Immigration Department states that higher-education applicants generally apply through EMGS or the institution, must be outside Malaysia when the application is submitted, and may need approval to study, eVAL and a Single Entry Visa depending on nationality. After arrival, a post-arrival medical examination is required within seven days before Student Pass endorsement. Read the official Student Pass guidance and EMGS medical-screening guidance for the current intake.
Parents should compare airport pickup, emergency contacts, insurance, hostel security, food options, transport to hospitals, holiday closures and who helps with local formalities. Geographic closeness to India can matter, but it should not outweigh a weak clinical or recognition file.
A practical parent decision framework
Vietnam may fit a family seeking a defined six-year partner shortlist and a transparent tuition range, provided the chosen university documents its English-medium clinical plan, hospitals, internship and NMC due diligence. Malaysia may fit a family prepared to compare a wider range of institutions and potentially pay more for a specific programme, provided the MMC, MQA, WDOMS and India-side checks are completed.
Choose the offer with the clearest written answers to four questions: What degree is awarded? Where does clinical training happen? What is the complete cost? What evidence supports the student's intended licensing pathway? If either university will not answer those questions, pause.
