Uzbekistan can look cost-effective and has established state medical institutions, but foreign-student fees, language tracks, admission processes and clinical arrangements vary by university.
The decisive question is not which country sounds better. It is whether the exact medical programme is documented well enough for the student to study safely, complete genuine supervised clinical training and understand the licensing steps required on return to India.

Cost: compare the invoice, not the advertisement
Vietnam's current partner data gives a useful range: Dai Nam University is listed at about $24,606 in six-year tuition, while the government universities use higher escalating schedules that reach about $38,646 for Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy and $39,350 for the University of Health Sciences, VNU-HCM. Hostel, flights, visa, insurance, documents and living expenses are separate.
In Uzbekistan, the Tashkent State Medical University admissions office states that foreign citizens are admitted on a contract basis and pay the tariff specified for foreign citizens, converted according to the relevant exchange rate. That is a reminder to ask the university for the actual contract rather than relying on an agent's approximate total.
Request the same spreadsheet from both options, with:
- tuition for each year and semester;
- registration, examination and laboratory charges;
- hostel, deposit, food and utility costs;
- insurance, residence registration and local transport;
- visa invitation or immigration-related charges;
- refund and transfer rules; and
- the final amount payable before travel.
Use an exchange-rate buffer. A cheaper dollar-equivalent estimate can change when the university bills in local currency or when a bank applies conversion and transfer charges.
Admission and NEET: separate university policy from Indian compliance
The admission route differs across universities in both countries. Dai Nam's current site profile treats a qualifying NEET result as mandatory at admission. Other Vietnam partner universities use their own Class 12 criteria. Uzbekistan universities can ask for academic documents, an interview or entrance assessment, medical documents and a contract payment; Tashkent State Medical University's published 2025 English-medium announcement asked Indian candidates for a Class 12 document and NEET scorecard, followed by an online interview.
That announcement is intake-specific, so it should not be treated as a permanent national rule. The family should ask the chosen university for a current written answer:
- Is NEET required to receive the offer?
- What Class 12 subjects and marks are accepted?
- Is an entrance interview or test required?
- Which documents need notarisation, translation or legalisation?
- What medical certificate and vaccination documents are required?
NMC's current FMGL materials should be checked for the student's admission year. The Commission's FAQ describes requirements such as minimum course duration, English medium and equivalent theory, practical and clinical training. These are India-side licensing considerations; they do not replace the university's own admission policy.
Language and clinical communication
Vietnam may be attractive to a student who wants an English-medium international programme in a tropical setting, but clinical communication still requires local-language preparation. Uzbekistan may offer English tracks, but the language of patient interaction, hospital teaching and documentation must be checked carefully.
The World Directory of Medical Schools record for Tashkent State Medical University lists a six-year Physician / General Medicine programme and identifies Uzbek, Russian and English as languages of instruction. It also records that the institution was formed in 2025 through a merger. This is useful background, not a blanket endorsement and not proof that every advertised track has identical clinical delivery.
For either country, ask for the curriculum and hospital plan by year. Specifically confirm:
- where patient-facing postings take place;
- whether bedside teaching is available in the stated course language;
- what local-language classes are compulsory;
- how attendance and clinical competencies are recorded;
- who supervises students in hospitals; and
- what internship or clerkship is included after academic study.
Parents should be cautious about claims of “100% English” if the answer does not explain how students communicate with patients.
Recognition and WDOMS: what the check can and cannot tell you
The World Directory is a useful identity and programme-verification tool. It is not the same as an NMC approval certificate. WDOMS's own search page says that a listing does not by itself denote recognition, accreditation or endorsement.
Before paying in Vietnam or Uzbekistan, save the exact school record and ask the university to confirm the awarding body and home-country authority. Then compare the programme against current NMC requirements. A family file should contain the offer letter, degree title, total duration, language confirmation, curriculum, hospital list, internship rules, registration evidence and receipts.
This approach is especially important when an institution has recently changed names, merged or moved students between faculties. The name on the contract, the name on the WDOMS record and the name on the final degree should be explainable in writing.
City, climate, hostel and family support
Vietnam's partner locations include Hanoi, Da Nang, Can Tho, Vinh Long, Buon Ma Thuot and the Ho Chi Minh City region. The climate is generally closer to what many Indian students already know, although heat, humidity and seasonal rain vary by city.
Uzbekistan offers a more continental climate, with much colder winters in many locations. That is not a reason to reject it, but it affects clothing, heating, travel, food and a student's first-year adjustment. Tashkent and other large cities may offer more international services, while the actual hostel and hospital commute must still be checked.
Ask both universities for the exact hostel address, room-sharing plan, security arrangements, distance to classes and hospitals, food options, emergency number and local registration process. Speak with current students through a university-controlled channel where possible. Do not rely on fabricated testimonials or unnamed “pass-rate” claims.
For Uzbekistan, the official government visa guidance identifies an A-1 student visa for the period of study, generally issued on an educational institution's request. Visa duration, registration and renewal steps should be confirmed with the university and the relevant embassy before travel. Vietnam's immigration process should likewise be verified from current official Vietnamese sources for the intake year.
Which family profile may fit each option?
Vietnam may fit a family that values a focused shortlist, a tropical environment, current itemised partner-university fee schedules and a structured counselling route. It still requires careful checks on language, clinical training and the maturity of each graduate cohort.
Uzbekistan may fit a student who is comfortable investigating a specific state or private institution, adapting to a colder climate and clarifying English versus Russian or Uzbek delivery. It should not be selected merely because an advertisement shows a low tuition number.
In both cases, the student's study habits, communication skills, academic resilience and willingness to prepare for India's licensing route matter more than a glossy campus image.

Do not release the first major payment until you can answer “yes” to these questions:
- Is the exact awarding institution clearly named?
- Is the full course duration and teaching language documented?
