For most Indian parents, Vietnam versus Portugal is a comparison between two very different routes. A named Vietnamese partner university may offer a direct application after Class 12 under its own criteria. Portugal has an international-student framework for first-cycle or integrated-master's access, but medical admission, language, seats and documents remain faculty-specific. The right choice is the programme with the clearer evidence for the student's academic, language, financial and licensing plan.
Start with the site's Vietnam university profiles, fee guide, country comparison hub and NMC validity guide. For Portugal, read the official DGES international-student guidance and then the chosen medical faculty's own admissions page.
Vietnam and Portugal at a glance
| Decision point | Vietnam | Portugal |
|---|---|---|
| Entry after Class 12 | University-specific partner criteria; NEET treatment differs by institution | International-student applications are made to the chosen institution, with faculty-specific rules |
| Course shape | Partner programmes commonly describe a six-year medical route | Medicine is commonly an integrated master's; DGES examples show 12 semesters and 360 ECTS |
| Language question | Confirm English delivery and Vietnamese clinical communication | Confirm Portuguese for teaching, patients, records and examinations |
| Fee planning | Site partner schedules currently span roughly $24,606-$39,350 tuition over six years before living costs | Tuition and living costs vary by institution, city and international-student category; obtain the faculty quote |
| Visa or residence | Verify the university-supported Vietnamese entry and temporary-residence process | Official Portuguese guidance describes a study residence visa and subsequent residence formalities |
| India-side check | Current NMC framework for the exact foreign medical programme | The same current NMC framework applies; country reputation is not a substitute |
This is a screening table, not a ranking. A Portugal medical programme can be academically rigorous and still be unsuitable if the student cannot meet its language or admission requirements. A Vietnam offer can look affordable and still be incomplete if the clinical-language, hospital, internship or document plan is unclear.
Admission route and selectivity
Vietnam's route should be checked university by university. Review Class 12 subjects and marks, age, NEET position, English evidence, interview requirements, health documents and the exact offer letter. The site's admission process guide and application documents checklist help organise the file.
Portugal's DGES international-student page says applications are presented to the university or polytechnic institution the student wants to attend, and that procedures differ by programme. The official 2026 DGES course guide for Medicine at the University of Porto illustrates the level of detail parents should expect: 12 semesters, 360 ECTS, published entrance subjects and annual places. It is an example, not a guarantee that an Indian applicant can enter that course or that another faculty uses the same rules.
Ask every Portuguese faculty whether Indian Class 12 qualifications are accepted directly, whether an equivalence or examination is required, which international-student category applies, and whether the faculty admits non-EU applicants to medicine in that intake. A general “study in Portugal” statement is not an offer.
Language and clinical training
Language is the central practical difference. In Vietnam, a programme may describe classroom teaching as English-medium while clinical communication still requires Vietnamese. In Portugal, the same question should be asked about Portuguese. The student must know how lectures, written papers, vivas, practicals, patient histories, ward instructions, records and assessment are handled.
Ask for a year-wise language plan and a named answer to these questions:
- When does patient contact begin?
- Which language is used in affiliated hospitals?
- Are clinical records and case presentations assessed in the local language?
- Is language support compulsory, optional or absent?
- What happens if a student cannot communicate safely with a patient?
Do not rely on the phrase “English available”. Medical study requires safe communication, not only the ability to read a textbook.
Six-year budget and residence planning
Vietnam's fee page is useful for initial budgeting, but families should request the intake-specific invoice. Add hostel, food, insurance, travel, translation, document legalisation, local transport, residence renewals and a contingency reserve. The cost-of-living guide explains why a tuition-only comparison is incomplete.
Portugal's total cost depends on the faculty, city and accommodation. Obtain tuition, application, registration, health cover, housing and residence figures in writing. Portugal's official study-residence visa service lists admission evidence, accommodation, insurance, criminal-record and means-of-subsistence requirements among the documents to check. Its listed fee and processing details can change, so use the live official page when applying.
Parents should also ask what happens if a visa is refused, a student withdraws, a place is deferred or the programme cannot be joined on time. The refund clause should identify tuition, application fees, deposits and accommodation separately.
Accommodation and family support
Accommodation is not a minor line item in either decision. Ask for the exact address, commute to teaching hospitals, contract length, deposit, utilities, internet, meal options, insurance expectations and the procedure for changing rooms. Portugal's residence process asks for accommodation evidence, while a Vietnamese university may arrange a hostel or refer students to private housing; in both cases, the family should keep the signed terms and payment receipt.
Parents should also compare travel distance from India, time-zone difference, airport arrival support and the ease of reaching a trusted contact. A lower tuition figure is not a lower total cost if housing, language support and hospital transport remain unclear.
Licensing and recognition: keep two questions separate
The first question is whether the student can be admitted to and complete the programme. The second is whether the graduate can later practise in India or Portugal. These are not the same.
For India, read the current NMC Rules and Regulations page and the FMGL FAQ for the relevant cohort. Check degree title, duration, medium, theory, practical and clinical training, internship or clerkship, local registration and final records. WDOMS is an identity directory, not an NMC approval certificate.
If a family is considering practice in Portugal, the Ordem dos Médicos registration guidance shows that professional practice depends on registration. Its foreign-doctor information also refers to a medical-communication examination or Portuguese B2 evidence in relevant cases. That is a later professional process, not proof that an Indian applicant is eligible for a Portuguese medical seat.
For Vietnam, the MOET quality-information system is one institutional source to consult. For both countries, keep the official curriculum, admission decision, fee schedule, clinical plan, internship evidence and degree documents.
Parent decision checklist
Score each named offer separately on evidence, not emotion:
- Written admission category and eligibility decision.
- Published course duration and degree title.
- Detailed teaching and clinical language plan.
- Hospital and internship documentation.
- Complete six-year budget and refund terms.
- Hostel, insurance, residence and emergency support.
- Current NMC questions answered for the student's batch.
- A realistic local-language learning plan.
If one country wins only because of a headline fee or a claim of “European recognition”, pause and request the missing documents. A delayed decision is safer than a six-year commitment based on an incomplete brochure.

Share the student's Class 12 subjects, marks, NEET position, budget and named offers. Counselling can organise questions; it cannot guarantee admission, visa approval, registration or examination outcomes.
Limitations note — 10 October 2026: University seats, international-student categories, tuition, language policies, visa procedures, accommodation and regulator requirements can change. Reconfirm the chosen faculty's current written documents and the NMC rules applying to the student's cohort before payment or withdrawal from another route.
