MBBS in Vietnam Student Visa and Temporary Residence 2026: What Indian Students Should Do After Admission

An Indian student admitted to an MBBS programme in Vietnam should treat immigration as a continuing six-year compliance task, not a one-time airport formality. Before booking travel, obtain the university's written route for entry, sponsorship, study permission, temporary residence declaration and future renewals. After arrival, confirm that the student's actual address has been reported and record the next expiry date.

This guide explains the questions to ask. It does not replace the Vietnamese Immigration Department, the Vietnamese embassy or the university's international office. Use the site's admission process guide, application documents checklist and university profiles alongside the official documents for your intake.

The three documents families often confuse

Document or stepWhat it doesWhat to verify
Entry visa or approvalAllows the student to seek entry under stated conditionsValidity, entries, entry checkpoint, purpose and name spelling
Study-related sponsorship or acceptanceShows the university's role in the admission and immigration fileIssuing office, programme, intake, duration and contact details
Temporary residence declaration or cardRecords or evidences lawful stay at the current addressWho files it, validity, address, renewal date and replacement process

An e-visa, where suitable for the student's circumstances, is not the same as a university-supported long-term study plan. The Vietnam National Immigration Portal publishes official entry information and warns applicants to use the official process. Its online material can change, so do not rely on an old screenshot or a link sent by an unverified intermediary.

Before payment: ask the university for a written immigration workflow

Request one dated checklist from the university or its authorised international office. It should answer:

  • Which document is used for first entry and what purpose is recorded?
  • Does the university sponsor, invite, extend or otherwise support the student?
  • Which documents must be translated, notarised, authenticated or legalised?
  • Who submits the application and who pays the official fee?
  • What must the student do at the airport or border checkpoint?
  • When is temporary residence declared after moving into the hostel or rented room?
  • What happens when the first permission expires?
  • Must the student remain in Vietnam, leave Vietnam or visit a specified office for renewal?
  • What is the fallback if the visa is delayed, refused or issued with an error?

Keep the answer on the university's official email domain where possible. A counsellor can organise the file, but an informal message promising that “the visa will be managed” is not a complete plan.

Prepare a visa and residence folder

Keep originals in hand luggage and encrypted or password-protected copies in two locations. A practical folder usually includes:

  1. Passport with the required validity and blank pages.
  2. Admission, acceptance or invitation letter issued for the exact programme.
  3. Fee invoice and payment receipt, if the university requests them.
  4. Visa application, approval, entry permission and previous immigration records.
  5. Recent photographs in the size and background requested by the authority.
  6. Class 10 and Class 12 records and any translated or authenticated copies.
  7. Medical fitness, vaccination or insurance papers if requested by the university.
  8. Hostel contract or the full address of the first approved accommodation.
  9. Parent contact, university emergency contact and airport-pickup details.
  10. A printed copy of the university's immigration checklist and renewal contact.

Check every spelling against the passport. A missing middle name, incorrect date of birth or wrong passport number can create a correction problem at the worst possible time. Do not submit a document that has been altered to make it fit a checklist.

What to do after landing

At entry, carry the passport, approval or visa, admission letter, accommodation address and university contact. Keep the approval document accessible; do not place the only copy in checked baggage. Confirm whether the university representative or accommodation provider meets the student and what to do if the flight is delayed.

Within the timeframe given by the university, complete the local residence step. The accommodation provider may be responsible for reporting the stay, but the student should still ask for confirmation rather than assume it happened. Save the address exactly as recorded. If the student moves from a hotel to a dormitory, or later from a hostel to a rented room, ask whether a new declaration is required.

The official immigration law materials describe temporary residence as tied to the relevant immigration document and permit. They also make clear that foreigners should comply with Vietnam's entry, exit and residence rules. This is why the student's address, document validity and university contact should be treated as academic administration, not merely travel paperwork.

Build a renewal calendar for six years

Create reminders at 120, 90, 60 and 30 days before the expiry date shown on the current document. At each review, confirm:

  • passport validity and damaged-page concerns;
  • the student's enrolment and attendance status;
  • current university sponsorship or confirmation;
  • accommodation and residence address;
  • insurance or health papers that may be requested;
  • travel plans and number of entries;
  • fee, appointment and translation requirements;
  • whether the student must remain in Vietnam during processing.

Never overstay because a renewal was “in progress”. Ask the university what written evidence is issued while an application is pending and follow the immigration authority's instructions. If the student loses a passport or residence document, report it promptly through the university and the relevant authority; do not travel on a photograph alone.

Immigration compliance and NMC due diligence are different

An approved visa says that the student may enter or stay under immigration conditions. It does not say that the medical degree will satisfy India's registration pathway. NMC's rules and regulations page currently links the FMGL regulations and updated FAQ material. The NMC FAQ includes requirements concerning course duration, English medium and theory, practical and clinical training.

Before payment, ask the university for the degree title, curriculum, medium-of-instruction statement, clinical schedule, internship arrangement and local registration or eligibility evidence. Check the exact institution in WDOMS, but remember that a directory listing is not recognition or an NMC approval. The site's Vietnam degree validity guide explains why these checks must be made together.

Parent checklist for a safe handover

  • Save the official immigration portal and university contact numbers.
  • Keep an offline copy of every visa, acceptance and payment document.
  • Confirm airport pickup and the first accommodation address.
  • Ask who reports temporary residence and obtain confirmation.
  • Record every expiry date in the parent's calendar.
  • Never pay a personal bank account for an immigration document.
  • Reconfirm rules before travel, renewal, address change or re-entry.
  • Keep NMC course due diligence separate from visa approval.

Visa categories, portal addresses, fees, entry conditions, residence reporting, university sponsorship and NMC guidance can change. This article uses the Vietnam National Immigration Portal, Vietnam's official legal-information materials, current NMC materials and the site's local university data checked on 25 August 2026. Reconfirm the exact route with the university, Vietnamese immigration authority and relevant Indian regulator before booking travel or paying fees.

Frequently asked questions

Can an Indian student enter Vietnam on an e-visa and begin MBBS classes?

Do not assume that an e-visa alone completes the student route. The university must confirm the permitted entry document, sponsor or invitation process, study permission and the steps needed after arrival for the actual programme and intake.

What visa category is used for study in Vietnam?

Vietnam's immigration system has a study or education purpose, but the exact visa or residence document depends on the current law, university sponsorship and the student's circumstances. Ask the university to state the current code and process in writing rather than copying another student's visa.

What is temporary residence declaration in Vietnam?

It is the recording of a foreigner's current stay address through the accommodation provider or the applicable immigration process. Ask the hostel, landlord or university who submits it, request confirmation and repeat the process when the address changes.

Does every MBBS student receive a temporary residence card?

No automatic entitlement should be assumed. Whether a temporary residence card or another lawful stay document is available depends on the university, purpose, passport, current immigration rules and supporting documents. Obtain the university's written answer before travel.

How long can an Indian student stay in Vietnam for MBBS?

The permitted stay is set by the valid visa, residence document or other immigration permission. A six-year medical course does not mean one document is valid for six years. Keep a renewal calendar and start university-supported renewal well before expiry.

What documents should students carry for visa and residence work?

Carry the passport, admission or acceptance letter, university immigration letter, visa or approval, accommodation address, photographs, medical or insurance documents if requested, fee receipts and copies of every submitted form. The university's current checklist controls.

Does a Vietnam visa prove that the degree will be valid in India?

No. Immigration permission and Indian medical registration are separate questions. Review the current NMC FMGL requirements for the exact course, medium, clinical training, internship, local registration position and admission year before paying.
