For most Indian families, Vietnam versus Thailand is not a simple “which country is best?” choice. Vietnam can be practical when a named university offers a documented route after Class 12 and the student is prepared for Vietnamese clinical communication. Thailand may appeal when a specific faculty offers a suitable international medical programme, but admission category, language, cost and local licensing must be checked faculty by faculty.
Start with the site's Vietnam university profiles, MBBS fee guide, eligibility guide and university verification checklist. Then compare those documents with one named Thai medical school. Country-level marketing is not enough for a six-year decision.
Vietnam vs Thailand at a glance
| Decision point | Vietnam | Thailand |
|---|---|---|
| Admission | Partner universities publish their own marks, subject, document and interview rules; NEET treatment is university-specific | International admission, prerequisites, tests, interviews and seats vary by faculty |
| Course language | Ask for English scope in lectures and exams, and Vietnamese requirements in clinical settings | Ask the same questions; English-labelled programmes may still require Thai in hospitals |
| Duration | Many Vietnam routes marketed to Indian students are six-year medical programmes; confirm the exact degree and structure | Course length and pre-clinical/clinical structure depend on the faculty and international category |
| Cost | Use the university fee schedule plus six-year living, hostel, visa, travel and contingency lines | Request a faculty-specific international fee schedule and full cost-of-attendance estimate |
| Clinical training | Verify named hospitals, hours, supervision, patient-language support and internship | Verify hospital access, clinical language, local permissions and supervised practice |
| Licensing | Review current NMC requirements and Vietnam-side degree/registration evidence | Review NMC requirements and the Thai Medical Council's relevant recognition/licensing information |
| Parent risk | Main risk is relying on a broad English, hospital or recognition claim | Main risk is assuming a Thai medical-school or regulator reference applies to the student's exact route |
The table is a screening tool, not a ranking. A strong document set from one university is more valuable than a country reputation with no programme-specific evidence.
Admission and seat availability
Vietnam's Indian-facing routes commonly begin with Class 12 science documents, passport, medical fitness or other university-specific paperwork. The current network data also shows that NEET treatment differs: Dai Nam lists NEET as an admission requirement, while other partner profiles describe it as relevant separately to India's later licensing pathway. Confirm the chosen university's written rule for the intake.
Thailand has no single international-admission route for all medical faculties. A parent may encounter different prerequisites, entrance tests, interviews, English tests, science requirements and international-seat limits. The question is not “Can an Indian student apply to Thailand?” but “Can this student apply to this medical faculty, in this category, for this intake?”
Request an official admissions page or email that names the degree, campus, intake, tuition currency, eligibility, deadlines and refund terms. Avoid paying because an agent says that seats are closing or that admission is guaranteed.
Language is the decision point families underestimate
Classroom English and clinical English are different. In both countries, ask whether the following are in English:
- lectures and textbooks;
- internal assessments and final papers;
- practical instructions and viva questions;
- case sheets and clinical records; and
- ward communication with patients and staff.
Even if a university teaches theory in English, students may need Vietnamese or Thai to take a history, explain a procedure and work safely with a clinical team. The English-medium and clinical-language guide explains the Vietnam-side questions in more detail.
Parents should ask for a sample timetable, clinical-year language policy and language-support plan. A promise that “students learn the local language naturally” is not a substitute for structured teaching and supervision.
Comparing the full budget, not only tuition
Build two written six-year budgets with identical headings:
| Budget line | Vietnam questions | Thailand questions |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | Year-by-year fee, increase clause, currency and payment schedule | International fee per year, laboratory/clinical charges and escalation |
| Housing | Hostel allocation, deposit, utilities and clinical-year location | Dormitory availability, deposits, city rent and transport |
| Living | Food, phone, local transport, books and personal costs | Same categories, adjusted to the exact campus city |
| Travel | India flights, airport transfer and emergency travel | India flights, airport transfer and emergency travel |
| Documents | Translation, legalisation, medical certificate and residence costs | Similar document, visa and residence costs |
| Contingency | Repeat exam, illness, delayed visa or course extension | Same risks plus any faculty-specific repeat or language costs |
Do not convert one country's tuition with an old exchange rate and compare it with another country's current quote. Record the date, currency, beneficiary, inclusions and refund conditions. The education-loan and remittance guide can help Indian parents structure the finance questions.
Recognition and licensing due diligence
The Thai Medical Council publishes information for foreign medical schools and maintains information on recognised Thai medical schools. That is relevant evidence for a Thailand decision, but parents must still ask what it means for the exact faculty and the student's intended route. The council's process and recognition material should be read directly, not summarised by an intermediary.
For Vietnam, check the university's exact legal identity, degree-awarding body, public quality information, WDOMS record and clinical/internship documents. WDOMS is a directory and should not be treated as a guarantee of Indian registration.
For India, read the current NMC rules and regulations and FMGL FAQ. Check course duration, medium, physical attendance, clinical training, internship, local registration and any batch-specific requirements. A university's local approval and NMC eligibility are separate questions.
Student life, travel and family support
Vietnam's partner universities include cities such as Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho and Vinh Long. Thailand's student experience also depends heavily on whether the campus is in Bangkok or a regional city. Compare the actual accommodation address, hospital travel, food options, weather, emergency support and access to the university international office.
Ask both universities who handles:
- visa or residence documentation;
- airport arrival and first accommodation;
- emergency health referrals;
- lost passport or police reporting;
- language support during clinical years; and
- parent communication during an academic or welfare issue.
These questions matter more than a generic safety ranking. Read the site's student visa and residence guide for Vietnam-specific questions, then request Thailand's current immigration instructions from the chosen faculty or official authority.
A parent decision rule
Choose Vietnam when a named university provides a coherent written offer, the total budget is manageable, the student accepts local-language clinical work and the family has verified NMC-relevant documents. Choose Thailand only when a specific faculty gives equally clear evidence on international admission, language, clinical training, cost and licensing—not because Thailand sounds more familiar.
If neither file answers the questions, wait. A delayed decision is safer than a six-year commitment built on a brochure. Use the site's contact route or WhatsApp counselling flow. Counselling can structure a comparison and identify missing documents; it cannot guarantee admission, visa approval, licensing or employment.

Fees, seats, admission rules, language delivery, clinical affiliations, visa conditions, regulator guidance and NMC requirements can change. This comparison uses the Thai Medical Council's foreign-school/licensing information, current NMC material, Vietnam Ministry of Health practice-training context and the site's Vietnam university data. Reconfirm both universities' exact documents, intake, degree, budget and licensing position before payment.
